From the Age of Netware
This picture was from the Fall of 1989. I will always remember 1989 as special, because that's the year that I started marketing my network applications. This was before the days of windows NT and at the time Novell's Netware OS owned the market. Fortunately for me and hundreds of other developers, Netware created a market for many applications to fill in the operational gaps of networking. I created several products to go after specific niche markets and in 1989, for the first time, the income from my product marketing exceeded that from my consulting business.
The downside to consulting is that no matter how much you charge an hour, you can only sell each hour of your time once, but by packaging that time in the form of a product you can resell that same hour perpetually.
